How you say it is as difficult to figure out as how you type it. eBay has just announced the launch of online classified advertising Web sites in Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy and Japan under the brand name “Kijiji,” which translates to “village” in Swahili and “all the good domain names were taken” in English.
eBay launched the sites in an attempt to sustain its astronomical growth rate and respond to seller complaints about the rising cost of doing business. On the consumer side, Kijiji wants to help people who live in the same city to “meet, information and trade ideas and goods.” Listing and finding items is free of charge for now.
Is this going to be a Craigslist crusher? Not anytime soon, says eBay, who believes Craig’s got it covered in the United States. They’ll be focusing on international markets for now.
Should they decide to go domestic, the opportunity for big dollars is there, including the online job-listing category ($800 million), auto ($400 million), real estate ($200 million), and everything else from dating to dog sitting ($550 million).
