If you’re looking for a restaurant using Google Local, it’s helpful to know that green means good eats and red means stay away. The web review system was announced this week at SES New York. Basic information like hours of operation, services offered, and Wi-Fi accessibility will be included along with user ratings ranging from positive (green) to neutral (yellow) to negative (red).

Sounds a little like what they’re doing over at A9 local, doesn’t it?

The author makes a good point that search engines supplementing local with reviews, maps, and other features signifies their understanding of how important it is to offer as much information (both in depth and variety) to customers as possible.

Even still, Jupiter Research analyst Niki Scevak has his doubts:

We’re bearish on local because the market seems to underestimate the time and resources necessary to acquire the reach that local obviously demands.

We agree.
