Short of hacking into their network or hiring a team of trained monkeys to conduct search after search, marketers can do little to discover what keywords their competitors are using on AdWords.
Enter GoogSpy.com, a service that allows users to type in a competitor’s name and see what terms they’re buying. It also displays the terms that rank within the Top 10 as well as the company’s top 25 competitors.
According to their press release, GoogSpy works by extracting some 1/2 million Google search results per day and dumping them into the GoogSpy database. Founded by an ex-Microsoft employee, the site can also be used in other ways as well, according to Director of Sales Dave Fiske:
I didn’t realize it would be such a powerful sales tool. Completely understanding how a company advertises online, and who is competing with them paints a compelling picture that you won’t find on their website.”
Of course, the site doesn’t provide data on how the words are actually performing, so knowing alone won’t cut it. That said, this is a great keyword research tool, so enjoy it while it lasts.
