Multiply.com: What You Want to Know (From Who You Know)

Anyone who’s ever read a barely literate user review on Amazon or taken a quick turn through the Rants & Raves section on Craigslist knows that you can’t always go by what others say. That’s why they’ll be pleased to hear of a new search engine that hopes to help those looking for information from a more reliable source.

It’s called Multiply and it’s being introduced as “the first search engine that finds information that’s been published in one’s social network,” (read the press release here).

In an already crowded social networking market, delivering a more personalized version of search results is where Multiply aims to set itself apart. They do this by returning content based on the social relationship of the content owner to the searcher as well as the nature of the content itself. This is different than the ‘6 degrees of separation’ type model put forward by Friendster and its ilk. Says Multiply:

“Multiply takes into consideration numerous real-world dynamics such as the real relationship between people (wife, roommate, co-worker, etc.) and the number of mutual relationships two people may share.”

This is a great concept, with features that should prove far more useful than others we’ve seen, such as the “Popular Searches in Your Network” shtick. Not to sound like a boastful sorority girl, but my network is pretty darn big, and what’s popular usually has little bearing on the people, places, or things I’d actually be interested in checking out. And either the results are always skewed, or my friends are a bunch of deviants, as the top searches always have to do with porn or prescription pills. Anyway, knowing the information and the source is a good way to cut through the noise.

Multiply is also offering some pretty cool goodies with sign-up, including a free home page, 1 GB of storage, and 10 free digital prints (rock!). Start your account here.
