Lots of lawsuits in the news lately, including two from the world of search.
The first is a patent infringement suit filed by Yahoo/Overture against FindWhat.com. Kevin Newcomb of ClickZ has more on this ongoing dispute, which centers around the bid-for-placement business model and technology (including account management tools) currently employed by both firms. Yahoo! is claiming ownership stemming from a 2001 patent. FindWhat kicked off the fight by trying to get that patent declared invalid. Yahoo! pulled Google in on the act, who later coughed up $270 million just after the company’s IPO. Pre-trial starts on April 11th, the jury trial is set for April 19th.
The second search suit has Microsoft working with Florida officials to bring down two spammers responsible for sending 60,000+ spam emails over the past year. Seems that Microsoft has been making this a habit, getting more aggressive about going after bulk-mailers. This suit differs from their previous “John Doe” lawsuits, where the identity of the defendant isn’t immediately known. BetaNews has more.
