Amazon.com meets Match.com in one of the newest spins on Internet dating. It’s called TrueDater.com and it’s built on the premise that how you represent (or mis-represent) yourself online could come back to haunt you.
An online review system allows members of participating sites (for now the list includes JDate, Match.com, and AmericanSingles.com) to write and post reviews of people they’ve been on a date with. The primary criteria being evaluated? How accurately the dater’s profile reflects their true persona. Singles can also check out the reviews of potential suitors and leave testimonials for those “great, but just a friend” types.
Regina Lynn of WIRED has the story.
Testimonials have long been a staple marketing technique, and it’s great to see a dating site get into the act. True, other social-networking services have been doing it for a while now, but this goes beyond friend-to-friend interaction. Lynn likens TrueDater to, “The virtual friend who says, ‘He’s a great guy, just not right for me,’ or, ‘She’s hot, you should call her, dude.’ Or, ‘Don’t bother.’”
This type of self-policing is definitely preferable to the alternative: government intrusion, as we’ve seen with some of the dating site legislation currently under debate.
