Google is to Yahoo As…

Great article today by Stefanie Olsen of CNET: Google vs. Yahoo: Clash of Cultures. In it the author pits the two search firms against one another as they take different paths on their way towards the top.

Olsen’s comparisons got us thinking about another famous pair - Wayne and Garth from the SNL skit Wayne’s World and the movie series of the same name.

Like Wayne, Yahoo’s the cool one. Slightly older and more experienced (ten years in business vs. Google’s seven) it’s more aggressive about its acquisitions.

Just as Wayne eyes both a guitar and a girl (It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine) in the movie, Yahoo goes after what it wants without hestitation (Inktomi, HotJobs, Overture,etc.). Google tends to show more restraint, preferring to go after smaller, less high-profile firms (Picasa, Kaltix, Keyhole).

Like Garth, Google is a slightly more geeky. It prefers tooling around in its Labs to rubbing elbows with Hollywood heavyweights like LLoyd Braun and it feels more at ease nuturing it’s products in beta (aka Garth’s basement) than it does in a room full of Madison Avenue execs (where Yahoo is typically in its element).

Party on! Schwing! and other words of wisdom available in audio form here.

Is this the same Lloyd Braun from Seinfeld that recommended Dinkins impose a mandatory name-tag policy in NYC?
