In Flight Advertising Takes Off

First they got rid of that Lilliputian bag of pretzels, now SearchViews is getting word of the latest outrage - in-flight advertising on airplanes. The Washington Post has the scoop on the airline industry’s latest attempt at drumming up revenue.

Passengers on a recent Alaska Airlines flight were treated to a flight attendant-led sales pitch for a Bank of America Visa Card as other flight attendants circulated applications up and down the aisles.

Captive audience advertising such as this is pretty hard to escape, considering the alternative is deplaning at 30,000 feet. It’s also much more intrusive than other forms of in-flight advertising, such as Saab having its logo rendered on napkins flight attendants hand out to passengers (though why anyone would want their company name associated with airline food is beyond our understanding).

This reminds us of another one we covered last month about pre-movie advertising in theatres. Will consumers rise up against this one too, or just turn up the volume on their iPods and treat it like we do flight attendant safety dance (i.e., zone out and ignore it)?
