Remember this URL (Or Not)

A few weeks ago I impressed a guy at a party by correctly pronouncing what was written on his t-shirt - floccinaucinihilipilification, or “the act or habit of esteeming or describing something as worthless, or making something to be worthless by said means”.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it’s the longest non-technical word in the English language and one that my dad had me memorize when I was 5, his nerdy idea of a parlor trick to make friends and relatives laugh at a little kid pronouncing such a long, complex word.

A more modern update can be found at this URL, which claims to be the longest domain name in the world.

The Guinness Book of World Records says otherwise, responding to the site administrator’s record query in this ‘we’re-not-so-impressed’ fashion:

“This record is currently rested, which means that no one can attempt this record and become a new record holder. It has been rested because there is no merit whatsoever in this. It takes little to no effort and is similar to taking the largest number in the world and then adding 1 to it.”

Too bad, cause we liked how the Longest Domain Name administrator was filling the potentially high-exposure space in such a random, neutral way (though the designer should be shot at sundown).

On a related note, the gentleman who owned the high-profile domain “www.jesus.com” for years appears to have sold out. Formerly housing a series of eccentric essays and a personals ad asking young women to date and/or bathe with Jesus, the site now points to a church. Die-hard fans will be happy to learn the site (and the ad) still reside here.

Once I won a competition, you had to collect letters and make a big word, and you were allowed to swap with other people. One smug guy pulled out his antidisestablishmentarianism and beamed nobody could beat him - his face turned purple when I produced floccinaucinihilipilification, he then said it wasnt a real word - his was the longest in the dictionary and cant be beaten. The look on his face when the dictionary was opened and he seen the word. He looked more embarrased than a guy who realised his date was a ladyboy. haha and I won $1000.
