The newest awkward single on the social networking scene is Engage.com.
Despite its name, which would scare off anyone looking for something less serious than picking out China patterns and getting matching tattoos, Engage.com is basically a dating service which looks to get couples together by employing their freinds and family as matchmakers.
Here’s an excerpt from the press release announcing their beta launch last month:
“Engage.com is the world’s first online relationship service where people help each other find love. There’s no scientific testing required to meet someone. Love happens on Engage.com much as it does in the real world, with a little help from your friends.”
Translated into non-PR talk:
- “online relationship service” = dating site
- “no scientific testing required” = eHarmony.com is dumb
- “love happens…with a little help from your friends” = we can make money from singles and nosy non-singles!
A June 2005 survey conducted by Engage says that more marriages happen as the result of third-party introductions than other manner. It doesn’t specifiy what constitutes a third-party introduction, but we’re guessing “The soup of the day is minestrone and Julie will be your server this evening.” doesn’t count.
Seriously though, it’s an pretty innovative concept and the folks behind it are the same ones who were influential with PayPal, so there’s gotta be something there.
