Less than a week after rumors of a Microsoft deal to buy Claria bubbled to the surface comes this report that Microsoft’s AntiSpyware application is no longer flagging Claria adware products as a threat to Windows users.
Spyware stopper and consultant to Sunbelt Software Eric Howes discovered the changes, which affect four Claria applications: Dashbar, Gator, PrecisionTime, and Weatherscope. Although Microsoft’s program still detects the presence of the adware, the default recommendation has been switched from “quarantine” to “ignore.”
This could be a sign that Microsoft is indeed getting serious about a Claria purchase. Then again, it may be something more benign, like a deal struck with Claria to change the detection status for a few select applications. Finally, it could be a simple oversight on the part of Microsoft engineers (it’s happened before). For now Microsoft’s not saying.
Keeping an eye on this one…
