Microsoft has revealed the name of its new operating system - “Windows Vista” (try to contain yourself). The new system will have enhanced security features, more comprehensive search capabilities and a user-friendly interface. CNN has more.
In the past Microsoft relied on plainer names that focused on the product itself - Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, etc. But, as Greg Sullivan, Microsoft group product manager puts it:
“We each have our own unique view or vista of this digital world. Windows Vista is going to bring more clarity to that.”
The Windows Vista site says the beta version will be made available to developers on August 3rd.
This article on eWeek has some in-depth analysis, including potential pitfalls for the product’s release. Microsoft’s got to play this one right - as InformationWeek points out - they’re facing a slow summer season, with a lot of firms holding off on licensing until they get more clarity on Longhorn’s (now Vista) release.
