Does it get any more legit than this? The former renegade file-sharing service known as Napster has joined forces with computer behemoth Dell to push music files at college kids.
Napster’s SuperPeer software will be making its debut at the University of Washington Seattle campus, allowing students to download files from school servers without the risk of a pummeling from the RIAA or infection from viruses, spyware, and other nastiness. Students will still have to cough up the cash for a music subscription, available at a reduced rate.
This is one of a series of deals with universities, including Cornell, University of Miami, and Vanderbilt University as well as partnerships with tech companies including Ericcson, Toshiba, Best Buy, Gateway, and Bac-O’s. (OK, so that last one was a joke)
Read the rest here, then get misty with Napster founder Shawn Fanning’s October 2000 statement before Congress and find out why we can’t let go of our 8-tracks.
