The image of the subway flasher which was captured on a quick-thinking woman’s cameraphone has been making the rounds in the media for a few days.
What started out as viral exposure on sites such as Flickr and BoingBoing has finally it to the front page of the NY Daily News.
As a result, a number of tipsters have come forward to identify the man in the photo as Dan Hoyt, the proprietor of a raw food restaurant named Quintessence (check out his bio here).
Hoyt was arrested back in 1994 for public lewdness at the same station and received two days of community service after entering a guilty plea.
Right now police are searching for Hoyt, who originally agreed to turn himself in yesterday but has since skipped town.
This is an awesome story and a great example of someone keeping a cool head in a scary situation. It’s also good to see the ‘Big Brother’ phenomenon (cameras everywhere you look) working out in the average citizen’s favor for once, not to mention the street cred this gives to social networks like Flickr -What do you mean they’re useless?! they can solve crimes!!
Red Herring has more.
