The US Postal Service has an unlikely ally in the war against declining mail circulation. Online auction house eBay is being courted by USPS as a way to build back its base of loyal customers.
This week two articles are taking a look at the phenomenon - this one in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and another in the Denver Post. Both cover eBay Days, a free event being held in 8 cities across the US as part of a partnership between eBay and USPS.
eBay days consist of a series of hour-long presentations open to the public that teach attendees how to become an eBay entrepreneur and how to effectively leverage the Postal Service to do so.
Right now 75% of the 125 million or so registered eBay users use the USPS. Close to 725,000 people rely on eBay as their primary or secondary source of income, according to a survey by Nielsen Research.
Despite their less-than-stellar reputation for customer service, the USPS is taking steps to make it easier for eBay sellers. Customers can now go online and print shipping labels, calculate postage and schedule pick-ups. Now if only it could get it there on time…
