Break out the mimeograph machine, Google is getting into the print ad game.
The search engine has been buying up pages in technology publications and then partitioning and reselling the ad space to advertisers in its AdWords network.
This article on CNET has the full story, but here are a few quick highlights:
- This experiment is definitely breaking new ground - right now Google makes 99% of its revenue from online ads
- Google is looking to become a one-stop shop for ad sales (online and off), further positioning itself as the middleman between advertisers and publishers
- So what will this look like? Check out a page of print ads taken from PC Magazine here.
- The market reaction has been mixed: some analysts say its a smart move in the face of shrinking PPC revenue, others say the move too far outside their core expertise (it’s probably a little of both)
