Googlers Mark Jen & Paul Watson in the News

One is best known for his discovery of a flaw in TCP/IP and making waves with his URL, the always-catchy Terrorist.net. The other is using his very public firing to make a name for himself.

What do they have in common? They’re both Googlers (well one still is, anyway) and they’re both in the news today.

Mark Jen, otherwise known as the Googler let go for blogging, has been recruited by the job search engine SimplyHired to help promote their latest endeavor - SimplyFired.com, a web site where those who’ve been given the boot can cool their heels and read the stories of others who’ve shared their fate. The SimplyFired Contest promises fabulous prizes to those who offer up their stories, with an esteemed panel of judges including Lockergnome’s Chris Pirillo and AdBrite’s Phil Kaplan. Full coverage here.

Whitedust.net is a portal site for security types. Today they’ve got a great interview with Paul Watson, a Googler who earned his 15 minutes of fame (and then some) by exposing some fatal flaws in Cisco systems. He likens working at Google to “nerd-vana” and recounts how came aboard the search giant. Here’s an excerpt:

“I’ll never forget the first phone screen. It was scheduled while I was in Las Vegas at DefCon, and I had been drinking all morning. I was in the pool with some friends when they asked about where I worked. Suddenly I remembered that Google was going to be calling me for my phone screen at any second, and I bolted from the pool and ran into my room to find my cell phone. The phone rang just as I got to it, and for the next hour I had the toughest phone screen of my life (while mostly intoxicated).”
