Think of it as Tolstoy without the toil. Shakespeare, but more succinct.
Amazon.com has just announced that it will be selling short stories for the low, low price of 49 cents each. The program is called “Amazon Shorts” and will feature short-form literature delivered electronically (there are no print editions) via email, PDF or regular web page.
Some are likening it to an “iTunes” for literature, and a number of well-known authors are submitting works that include alternate chapters and scenes from well-known stories as well as author’s notes and single scenes.
This is a really cool idea and will no doubt help both new and accomplished authors alike. Despite a relatively healthy consumer demand, publishers often have a hard time selling smaller works such as novellas, so this type of marketplace is a good fit. Fans of authors who have no problem racking up sales will now have a chance to get even more of what they love. It’s kind of like iTunes + DVD special features for the literary set.
