French President Jacques Chirac yesterday announced plans to help fund a Eurocentric search engine to compete with Google and Yahoo as part of an effort to protect the nation’s technological supremacy.
Chirac will be working with French firm Thomson and Deutsche Telekom to develop a “multimedia search engine for the internet.” It’s called Project Quaero which is Latin for “hard to spell” (also ‘to seek’) and the full program will be explained in detail later this month.
Ever the ones to rail against US influence, France has already been hard at work on an online digital library to rival that of Google’s. The development of a engine is a logical next step.
The new engine will not be created from scratch, but rather built upon “science and technology that already exists in France and Germany.” Said Chirac in a speech earlier this year:
“Culture is not merchandise and it cannot be left to the blind forces of the market. We must staunchly defend the world’s diversity of cultures against the looming threat of uniformity. It’s time to go on the offensive.”
Well put, Mr. Chirac, and when a search on the word “cheese” yields links to Chuck E. Cheese and hippie jam band The String Cheese Incident as two out of the top 5 organic results and an AdWords ad for HickoryFarms showing up as #1, it’s no wonder. We all know how y’all feel about your national food…

Quaero ? I don’t think so !!!
Quaero is a political search engine for European and I believe it will go no where !
The french president came up with this concept , he is so funny !!!
Some European might use this Quaero but they really make me laugh when they say it’s going to compete with Google ! What a joke !
Now let me share what i know. There is an international search engine coming up in April 2006. Its name is MEGAGLOBE.
Now MEGAGLOBE will be translated in more than 150 languages and will have billions of pages.
MEGAGLOBE will also have sponsored results with a new concept. Now Google might not like that at all. But who cares ? Competition is good.
