The current job market could only be described as sluggish, yet hiring for search engine marketers is moving along at a healthy pace. But even though there are lots of positions available, many of are going unfilled.
This is due, in part, to the difficulty of finding viable candidates. The relative newness of the field and the highly specialized skill set required mean that many candidates simply don’t have what it takes to hit the ground running - something most SEM businesses desperately need.
A recent article takes a look at 8 Skills for Entry-Level SEM, outlining the bare-bones skills needed for anyone making a transition into the search marketing sector.
I recommend reading the full article but if you don’t have time or you’re a SEM recruiter just looking to get some ideas for your help-wanted ad, here they are in abbreviated form:
- An understanding of how computers work.
- The ability to work with a wide range of software.
- A strong command of the English language.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills.
- A working knowledge of how ISPs work.
- Strong background in web design.
- A traditional marketing mindset.
- Solid research skills.
