There’s a new mobile phone service that allows you to make 411 calls for free. Of course there’s a catch, but in this case it’s not too bad.
Free411.com promises you’ll “never pay for directory assistance again!” In exchange for free numbers and addresses, callers must listen to a 10-second ad before Free411 coughs up the requested number.
The ad will most likely be for a competitor of whomever’s number they called for (Pizza Hut for Domino’s, etc.) and may include some sort of incentive or discount (order now and buy one get one free). Callers can press a button to change their minds mid-call and immediately be connected to the competitor instead.
I gave it a spin and called to my company’s number. Apparently we have no competitors (or more likely Free411 had no ads that match) because I was able to directly connect without listening to an ad spiel.
I tried again with a listing for a neighborhood bar. The system didn’t recognize the name but while I was on hold for an operator I listened to an ad for pizza. Makes sense - I could see barhoppers calling to get the address of a bar across town and then saying forget it and ordering pizza instead.
Unless the ads get really, really long or obnoxious this is my new 411.
The CNET blog has more.

My girlfriend turned me on this service several months ago and I have used them ever since. Be clear on the number though because there are a couple of others out there that I guess people get confused about. The service to use is 1-800FREE411 (1-800-373-3411). It’s totally free. Just program it into your cell and you’re good to go. Awesome. I think I’ve probably saved $100 on 411 calls since I started using it.
vinny and ninny are USDA approved and they come with all thier papers ,Vinny and ninny are both 5 months old and are just moving into social life and they are very fun of kids as they like to play around with them and also vinny and ninny like very one around them, dogs cats and other home pets .I really love vinny and ninny but i recently got a job that is taking me much of my time and i do not think that is fair to vinny and ninny ok and so my wish is that they go to a perfect home of love and care and if you are to give them that then contact me atfor more informatiopn and picstures
i spent 45 minutes on 1-800-373-3411 (1-800-free-411} today trying to get a phone number for the airport in augusta georgia and never did get a human being. i speak very clearly but there voice recognition program acts like i’m speaking martian. its very frustrating and now they tell you that you must register on line to speak to a human being. i’m here and there’s no place to register. this sucks!!!!
Although I appreciate it’s there, I find this service to be frustrating at times
I’m here to find the place to register for operator assistance as prompted by the Free411 recording. I can’t find it.
What is the deal in registering online;this is not funny. Looks like a hoax. Used 1800free411 but can be vert frustrating without an operator when needed
This sounds to good to be true
I agree with all who said, where do you register? and you can speak clear as day, an the stupid voice says, “was that” what ever you asked for? hell no , so i just give up and pay the $1.25 just to get a simple number.
thought it was to good to be true.
