The presidential potty break heard ’round the world is generating a ring of controversy around Rick Wilking, the contract photographer responsible for the now-infamous shot of the president passing a note to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice regarding one of life’s most basic necessities.
In an article today Reuters’ news picture editor Gary Hershorn defends Wilking and says that the decision to transmit the note to Reuters clients was not made by Wilking:
“I’m so adamant that Rick has nothing to do with this. He was just the guy who pushed the button.”
While the photo was slightly enhanced via Photoshop to tone done overexposed white portions, Hershorn says no other manipulations occurred.
Lots of angry letters have been circulating like these ones that claim the decision to publish the photo was out of line.
Says Ron Smith of Houston, Texas:
“If you spent as much time on self evaluation as you do on printing irrelevant crap, just maybe you could convince us that journalism is a profession that has some form of integrity and ethics.”
Ha! He just said “crap”!
(Sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves)
