Yahoo Launches Instant Search, Lucky Feelings Abound

If you’ve ever stood in front of the microwave muttering “hurry up, hurry up, hurry up” then the latest innovation from Yahoo is bound to be big hit with you.

It’s called “Instant Search” and it went into beta last yesterday on the next.yahoo.com site.

Type any query into the Instant Search box and a single result will appear instantly on the page, right below the search box. There’s no need to hit a Search button or even the Enter key and there’s no sorting through pages of results (unless, of course - that’s what you want).

Why was this developed? This post in the Yahoo Blog explains:

“If search engines are so smart, why do they give you millions of results when you type in “boston weather”? Why even ten, for that matter? Why not just one? Or better yet, why not just tell me what the weather is?”

Indeed. A few test runs for movies, weather, dictionary definitions and mathematical equations all returned exactly what I was looking for on the first time around. It’s a wee bit slow, but I could definitely see myself using it every day.
