Bill Gates: There’s a Google Under My Bed

Whether Larry & Sergey (alone or together) could take him in a fight is up for debate, but there’s still good reason for Bill Gates to be scared.

Google’s explosive success and unbridled ambition has struck fear into the hearts of all its competitors, but none more so than Microsoft.

A new article published by the Wharton School takes a fresh look at the various ways Google poses a threat to the Redmond-based software giant.

It starts with all the recent events that signify Google’s move onto Microsoft’s turf: Microsoft’s recent announcement of a reorg, the Kai-Fu Lee recruitment snafu, the Google/Sun partnership, etc.

Then it digs deeper into the real heart of what’s going on:

“Microsoft’s success has been due in large part to its realization two decades ago that control of the operating system on personal computers would give it a great amount of leverage over PCs…But many in the computer business have long believed that the core platform could be moved to a higher level, that technology gurus could establish a web-based platform that runs in the browser and is written in the language of the browser rather than the language of the operating system.”
