Jon Lech Johansen, the Norweigan hacker responsible for wreaking havoc on the the entertainment industry at the age of 15 by authoring a computer program that allows users to copy DVDs, has just been hired on by tech entrepreneur Michael Robertson.
Johansen, also know as ‘DVD Jon’, will be working on a “significant new project” as part of Robertson’s digital music entity MP3tunes.
Yesterday Robertson made a this post in his blog which he comments on how the union came to be:
“I’ve known Jon for a few years as an email acquaintance. I have always admired his work and his strength to stand up for what he believes is right. He doesn’t advocate piracy, but does advocate consumers’ rights to manage their own purchased content. I told him that if he ever needed my assistance to let me know…Unknown to him, MP3tunes is in the midst of a project called Oboe to bring digital music into the 21st century. I knew he’d be a great fit for the team, so I quickly extended him a job offer. It took a few months to process the immigration paperwork, but now he’s living in San Diego and working on Oboe.”
Wired has more coverage. There’s also this article in the Wall Street Journal via the PPG.
Good luck Jon. Let’s hope you can stay ahead of the law in the States. Just in case, we’re shipping you one of these.
