Yahoo CEO Terry Semel took the gloves off yesterday during a Q & A session at Web 2.0 in which he made light of Google’s recent efforts to expand beyond the search box.
“So far they don’t seem to have a plan, but maybe they do. Maybe magic will happen tomorrow.”
Oh no, he did-n’t!
Semel went on to say that Google’s new products, including email (Gmail), social network (Orkut) and personalized home pages (Google Personalized Search) appear to be making Google “look more and more like a portal. And as a portal, it probably would be rated No. 4.”
Oh no, he did-n’t! Part II!
Of course Semel can say all he wants but that won’t change the stock prices. Google’s is up by 60% this year as opposed to Yahoo’s decline of 10%.
However, Semel makes a good point when he says, “This is a marathon run, not a sprint.”
