By now most of you have heard about the Google Library Project and the controversy surrounding the search engine’s plan to scan millions of copyrighted works.
Now Yahoo is getting into the game with what it calls the Open Content Alliance, a “permanent archive of multilingual digitized text and multimedia content” that is “representing the creative output of humankind” according to a statement on its web site.
Essentially this is very similar to what Google’s doing, but with the added benefits of being opt-in and a much more of a group effort rather than just one company holding the cards.
Bunch of links for you on this one - here’s the official press release as well as the announcement on the Yahoo Blog. There’s a nice high level write-up on BBC News and Nick W of Threadwatch has commentary.
