Within the last year, Facebook has become the A-list obsession of college students, and even more recently, high school kids as well. Frequently compared to MySpace and Friendster, its popularity consistently outshines the competition in this age group (well, my friend group at least).
But why is it so popular?
Unlike its competition, Facebook offers an easy way to link individuals by school and keeps you in touch with your school’s social life, current events, student groups, and even classes 24/7.
In order to get started with Facebook, your school has to be a registered member. At this point, if it’s not, you may want consider a transfer before people greet your “We don’t have Facebook” comment with a look of honest shock followed by pity.
Once you’re registered, Facebook presents an endless number of amusements promising to keep otherwise hard-working students awake until the wee hours.
Here are just a few:
- Check up on a secret crush or an ex-significant other without ever having to speak to them.
- “Facebooking” is a great way to find someone whom you may have met at a social gathering yet can’t completely remember the morning after. If you can remember their name, Greek affiliation, year, or residence, odds are you’ll be able to find them.
- Dating someone who has a Facebook profile? Announce it by selecting “In a Relationship” and have their name and profile linked from yours (this is another area where the other guys are lagging behind).
- If you want to (shock) use Facebook for academic reasons, you can find someone in your class by listing your courses to exchange notes, numbers, or perhaps, a drink at a later time.
As an alumnus, I will proudly admit that even though school is over I’m still updating my friends and profile, checking in on certain folk and (almost!) never forgetting a birthday with the Birthday Reminders.

What a great write-up of this hot new “it” site that I only learned about last week from the younger, hipper, sisters of my boyfriend. NOW I get it, girls!
