John Battelle has a great post in his blog today. It’s titled “Thinking About Google and The Turning Point” and it draws some comparisons between the world’s most popular search engine and Microsoft in its heyday.
In doing so Battelle references a number of solid sources, including a 1997 Wall Street Journal article in which Microsoft’s then CTO outlines ambitions to get a “vig”, i.e. a small cut of, every transaction that takes place on the Net using Microsoft technology.
It’s a little dense so if you don’t have time for a full read know that some of the best Battelle musings come later in the post.
Here’s one of them in which he comments on Google’s most daunting task yet:
“In seven short years, Google has gone from a geeky startup with one good idea into an agenda-shaping player responsible for navigating complex relationships with world governments, the personal privacy of millions, major trade organizations, and hundreds of thousands of businesses small and large. It’s an extraordinary weight to bear, it seems to me. It’s the kind of position that requires a balanced mixture of leadership, will, and diplomacy.”
