Say all you want about the popularity of iTunes. But Euros won’t be listening.

A new report by Jupiter Research says that illegal file sharing networks are three times more popular than those of the legal variety.

The report also contends that most file swappers do not view music as something that should be a paid for.

Jupiter analyst Mark Mulligan:

“The digital youth of today are being brought up on a near limitless diet of free and disposable music from file-sharing networks…Unless the music industry can transition these consumers whilst they are young away from free consumption to paid music formats, be they digital or CDs, they may never develop music purchasing behaviour and the recording industry could suffer long-term harm.”

Only about 5% of online consumers pay for downloaded music. Sweden stood out among those countries polled as having the highest demand for paid music - roughly 30% over there are willing to pay.
