Microsoft Opens Up

Microsoft has just announced that it will be making the file formats for its new Office 12 applications (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint) available as open standards.
The company has been facing increasing competitive pressures from its rivals, including IBM and Sun as well as governments and agencies who are hinging substantial public contracts on the availability of open standard software. One such entity is the state of Massachusetts, whom we told you about back in September.
