Comic Bubble Search Engine: OhNoRobot.com

Written By Reprise Media | December 8, 2005 | Share This |

It calls itself a comic bubble search engine, yet a search for “lasagna” won’t yield you anything about Garfield.

That’s because OhNoRobot focuses on comics that lie outside the mainstream, relying on volunteer cartoonists and fans to collect and transcribe the items in its database. So far its got over 15,000 entries from over 180 different strips.

From the story on BoingBoing:

“If you make a comic and put it on the Web, it’s because you want that comic to be read. And if a comic deserves to be read, it deserves to be found. Especially by people who are looking for something like it. It deserves to be searched. If it can’t be searched, a feeling of futility condenses in the air. And webcomics have a serious searchability deficit. Google is comics-illiterate.”

Also, here’s a great interview with OhNoRobot’s founders.

If that earlier mention of Garfield gave you nostalgia for America’s most-washed-up cat, visit his official online home and play a rousing game of Hairball Hack.
