Google China Moves Closer to Launch

Tomorrow Google will launch Google.cn, a censored version of its search engine services to be made available for use in China, the world’s most populous country and home to more than 100 million web users.

A number of restrictions on search engine results currently exist in China, the result of the Chinese government’s attempts to block objectionable material.

The AP story Google launching censored service for China has more, including this reaction from a high-profile media group:

“‘This is a real shame,’ said Julien Pain, head of Reporters with Borders’ Internet desk. ‘When a search engine collaborates with the government like this, it makes it much easier for the Chinese government to control what is being said on the Internet.’”

It should be noted, however, that Google isn’t extending this newfound alliance all the way. The search engine will post notifications that enable users to tell when content has been removed and its still keeping gmail out of it (for now, at least).

More on the story here in BoingBoing.
