Google Local Ads & The Blue Balloon

Google appears to be testing paid ads in its local search results.

Some users are reporting seeing little blue balloons, pushpin-like objects that are appearing next to select search results. The balloons point to sponsored links for local businesses related to a user’s search.

Search Engine Watch has more, including this official statement from the gang at Google:

“As part of our continuing effort to provide a positive advertising experience for users and advertisers, we are always exploring ways to improve the way we display ads. We are currently conducting a limited test of ads on Google Local. We do not have any other specific details to share at this time.”

Is this it for the Yellow Pages? Probably too early to tell but blogger David Galbraith certainly seems to think so. See what he has to say about it here.
