Earlier this month, Google Video’s ceremonious launch was met with a few tiny critisicms, mostly concerning the store’s inconsistent pricing, dicey video quality, lack of portability, wildly differing video preview lengths and poorly designed layout. NYT’s David Pogue pointed out that it’s only a beta test, adding, “that’s fortunate, because at the moment, the site is appalingly half-baked.” But Pogue also predicted that Google would quickly address the problems.
Well, Google is now copping to its critics. Seattlepi.com reports that Vice President Marissa Mayer admits that Google “made a big mistake” with regard to the Video bow. She specifically cites the problematic front page layout and its failure to feature shows, such as CSI and Survivor, that Google touted in the press. This issue, at least, has been rectified since Tuesday, as a glance at the site will attest.
But with Google still working the kinks out of their video store, are they ready to open a music shop? Analyst Robert Peck thinks so, according to News.com’s Google Blog, and predicts its arrival within three to six months. Google is mum, but Peck says:
“We think this is a logical step, now that the nascent Google Video product has been introduced…we do think this fits with Google’s recent moves and its ultimate goal of organizing the world’s information.”
Gary Price at Search Engine Watch has an in depth look. He would welcome Google’s presence in the online music game, observing, for instance, that it could drive down prices; check the link for more.
