It’s not the kind of article a PR exec is happy to have land on her desk first thing in the morning.
Jonathan Thaw’s piece for The Bloomberg News, titled Yahoo! Gives Up Quest for Search Dominance, uses quotes from the search engine’s chief financial officer as the basis for future-forward speculation as to why Yahoo is content with being the Jan Brady of the search engine world.
Here’s a clip:
“‘We don’t think it’s reasonable to assume we’re going to gain a lot of share from Google,’ Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker said in an interview. ‘It’s not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share.’”
Yahoo today is firing back, with a lengthy “Don’t count us out” style post in its Yahoo Search Blog penned by Qi Lu, VP Engineering, Search and Eckart Walther, VP Products, Search.
A small snip:
“There’s been a lot of conjecture and confusion today about Yahoo’s commitment to being the world’s best search engine-talk which anyone who’s been following the evolution of Yahoo Search would have realized is…just plain wrong…Believe it or not, we are still in the early days of search. As all of us at Yahoo agree, we’re in it for the long haul, and we’re in it to win.”
More analysis from Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Watch, who actually had the opportunity to speak with the controversial article’s author.
