Hoo Doggie! Friday Search Roundup

We looped our lasso, tossed it over the bucking head of the internet, and tied up some search engine news for y’alls.

Lose your blues Barry at Search Engine Roundtable posted yesterday about a couple of changes to MSN search, including a whiter, cleaner (and dare we say Google-esque?) search interface. They’ve also apparently fiddled with their search ranking algorithm, as it’s reported that searches are returning slightly different results. The reviews for both alterations are pretty good all around; the Unofficial Microsoft Weblog likes it (natch), Search Engine Journal says “the design makes searching more enjoyable on MSN,” and while Anatoly Lubarsky takes issue with the “psychedelic green” search button, he calls the redesign a “good move.” Of course, he notes of the new algorithm, “MSN still has a long way to go to take up to 5% of search traffic from Google or Yahoo.”

Can search be gender segreagated? PaidContent reports that iVillage is planning to relaunch their women.com portal as a vertical search engine (branded “Search for Women”) near the end of the 2nd quarter. According to the their conference call transcript, iVillage plans to promote the switch by “blanketing the Internet with add campaign promoting Search for the Women’s Intuition.” [sic] Interesting news. Maybe it’ll be able to find a recipe for a good tasting cosmo.

Yeah, we got that covered Cool news from a Digg user about a fast, clean search engine for album cover art, albumart.org. “This is the absolute best CD cover search engine I’ve seen so far. Beats FindMyCover and all the others hands down. No ads, beautiful design, AJAX-based and fast.” We tried it, too, and found it to be all that and a Can of Bees.
