Looks like those cards at Gawker Media went and launched themselves ValleyWag, a gossip rag about Silicon Valley. They went live almost a month ago, but late this week they’ve got the blogs really buzzing over Larry Page/Marissa Mayer tidbit: apparently they used to go steady! “There, we said it.” But what’s everyone else saying?
“I’ll be reading it regularly,” raves New Media Musings. Google Blogoscoped gushes, “There’s lots of Google and Yahoo related stuff to be found.” “The Marissa Loves Larry story is dishy fun,” muses Paul Kedrosky. “More info in the FAQ,” serves Steve Rubel…ok, so the gossip on the gossip paper is a little flat.
Maybe there’s a reason for that. We did check the FAQ, and right off, ValleyWag admits “Silicon Valley hasn’t been conducive to gossip.” But they might be on to something with another point: “where there’s money, there’s excess, and where there’s excess, there’s gossip.” After all, we touched on the, ahem, uncommon lives of tech billionaires a couple of days ago ourselves.
ValleyWag also says - right on the front page - that “you people in Silicon Valley are far too busy changing the world to care about sex, greed and hypocrisy.” Well, they know their audience. Color Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Watch, unimpressed. He points out that Gray Hat News has “been all over the Marissa scene…ValleyWag isn’t going to be able to walk into their territory without taking a blow.” And as for that stuff about being too busy and serious for gossip, Sullivan says:
“I’ve got it down now. Before asking about things like Chinese Censorship or AutoLink issues or whether partnering with AOL might impact Google’s editorial quality, gotta ensure all interviews now cover past, current and future dating partners.”
Point taken; serious stuff deserves to be taken seriously. That said, we do welcome a little levity to lighten the mood, so we’ll probably keep an eye on ValleyWag now and again.
