Is there a new contextual ad network on the horizon?

Stephen Baker of Blogspotting seems to think so. He recently talked to Jim Barnett, former CEO of Altavista, who revealed plans to launch a “next-generation” advertising network called “Turn, Inc.” sometime in the next few months.

From the Blogspotting post:

“He [Barnett] has $10 million in venture funding, and some 16 PhDs in-house. The idea is that advanced search will target advertisements to users with a precision we’ve not yet seen.”

Further details on the new network have been difficult to find. The web site is just a glorified placeholder, although John Battelle does have a few more details, including the rather bold statement that Turn’s plan is to “complete directly with AdSense.”

One thing’s for sure, they’re doing some aggressive hiring, as evidenced by these ads on Yahoo/HotJobs.
