AdSense Earners: Dreamhouse or Birdhouse?

Is the life of a Google AdSense earner thankless toil or easy money? Search Engine Roundtable links to a 3+ page thread at the Web Master World forums, entitled simply “house,” that certainly makes the AdSense dream sound attractive…and attainable. kaymeis asks, “Has anybody bought [a house] with AdSense yet?” If you believe the responses, many folks are at least using supplemental AdSense income to help with mortgage payments, and a lucky few sound like they’re just about getting up to gold house and rocket car status.

JollyK, for instance, says “I used my Adsense income to pay the mortgage payments on a house, and then, a year or so later, I sold it for enough to pay off all my debts…Couldn’t have done it if I hadn’t had my ‘day job,’ though.” And castar seems to be doing well indeed: “I’m having my 5,000 sq. foot dream house built, half paid up front, thanks to adsense.” One poster was purportedly able to use AdSense income to help make a down payment on a country house and clear trees off its “four large lots.” ve3cnu bought…a Subaru. “Not quite at the house level, but maybe someday…”

It all sounds tantalizing, especially if you see another forum thread linked today by SE Roundtable, this time at Digital Point, suggesting that almost two thirds of AdSense folks spend less than five hours a day managing ther campaigns. Of course, samples from both forums are tiny…and unscientific…and unverifiable…but we can dream, can’t we?

Of course, SEOmoz is around to bring us back down to Earth. Randfish points to a great post at SEO Scoop analyzing another WMW thread talking about the notoriety of monster AdSense earners. The gist is that the process of learning SEO and eventually making money from those skills involves hard work - even without a day job - patience and perserverence, just like anything worth doing. Randfish puts it well: “The trial and error system of growing AdSense earnings or growing a business overall is what makes web entrepreneurship such an exciting place to be.”
