Automatic for the People: blinx Introduces Pico

Last time we checked in on blinkx the San Francisco-based multimedia search outfit was rumored to be in talks with Rupert Murdoch.

A lot’s happened since then, including the development of Pico, a product the company is dubbing “the world’s smallest search engine”.


Unlike other search engines, Pico automatically searches for information based on the content on a user’s screen. In other words, it does its chores without being asked. There’s no need for the user to stop what he or she is doing and perform a separate query.

BetaNews has more of the story, including this quote from blinkx CTO Suranga Chandratillake:

“While others, including Microsoft and Apple, have talked about the potential of implicit search before, blinkx has once again pre-empted others by making it reality first. More than anything else, Pico is about the possibility of search-less search.”

    I don’t think Blinkx is the first to do this. I remember Autonomy themselves releasing something similar a few years back called Kenjin.
