Today Google has announced its acquisition of Upstartle, a small software development company out in California and the makers of a popular web-based word processing program called Writely.
A little more subtext from a story in the San Jose Mercury News:
“Google executives have said the company’s goal is to put the Internet at the center of the consumer experience. They have hinted that they will allow users to run their programs and store their files on Google servers rather than on their home computers alone.”
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but there’s lots of write-ups available in today’s press, ranging from short and sweet to the more in depth.
Why is this important? Well, a lot of folks are seeing this as a very strategic foray into Microsoft’s space, with Writely posing a threat to products contained in Microsoft’s Office suite, an $11 billion dollar a year moneymaker for Mr. Gates.
