Google Talk Cross-Pollinates with Blackberrys

Okay, I know you’re probably tired of hearing about Google and all these XYZ Mobile companies forming alliances this week - but I think this news is pretty hot. Google and RIM announced back in January their intent to bring Google Local and Google Talk to Blackberry handsets. The original press release indicated that Google Local would be available immediately, but fans of the popular IM program would have to wait until spring time.

I guess spring has sprung. Lo and behold, Google Talk for Blackberry is officially here. Just like Google Local for Blackberry, this program can be downloaded directly onto the handset by pointing Blackberry Browsers to www.blackberry.com/googletalk (strangely this site only works with IE or the aforementioned Blackberry Browser).

Currently, the software doesn’t support VOIP like the desktop version, but according to chatter on Blackberryforums.com, sending and receiving messages within Google Talk will not be billed as SMS or text messages; that essentially means unlimited messages (if you have an unlimited data package with your phone service).

I have enclosed a couple of images (1, 2) of Google Talk on a Blackberry 8700c. The software worked as promised; its attributes (including the control, features and display) are very similar to its older desktop sibling.
