What’s in a name? Well, dollars for one thing.
The introduction of the .eu domain extension earlier this month has resulted in over 300,000 European Union citizens registering in the first hour alone, with those from Germany leading the rush.
An article in USA Today explains the reasoning behind the rush:
“Online ad revenue is expected to reach $13.6 billion in the USA this year, up 14% from 2005, according to Jupiter Media…The market has rebounded from a “depression” after the dot-com bubble burst in 2000.”
But has it? Mike of Techdirt wonders why we don’t hear more about the failures - those who purchased pricey domain names with the intention of reselling and then were never able to recoup their initial expenses.
Take heart, Mike, maybe these loser-iffic stories on Slashdot will be what it takes to satisfy the inner skeptic.
On a related note, CNET links us to this fun collection of domain name facts.
