While Earth the planet appears to be getting warmer, Earth the Google application is arguably heating up as well, with some help from Maxim. In honor of the men’s magazine’s 100th issue, special Google Earth data is available that will allow users to zoom in on a giant replica of the front cover, featuring scantily-clad Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria.
Search Engine Journal has a screen shot of the monstrosity, constructed out of vinyl mesh in the desert near Las Vegas. Interested users will have to go to Maxim’s site if they want a peek, as the giant cover apparently won’t be included with the standard Google Earth updates.
In related news, Google is also adding streaming video, although maybe not necessarily of the kind Maxim fanatics are hoping for. Discovery Communications will integrate 2-4 minute informational videos into Google Earth from the cable network’s archives. Starting with 10 US National Parks, Discovery will eventually provide video info about historical sites and other points of interest around the world, including Trafalgar Square and the Great Wall of China. Users will see globe-shaped icons that will link to Discovery-hosted websites, where they’ll see the videos - and plenty of ads, for which Discovery will keep the revenue.
