It’s no secret that Yahoo! is getting ever more social; they even joked on April Fool’s Day about buying all of Web 2.0 (”That’s right, just like a trip to Costco, we’re buying in bulk and expect to save a lot of cash”). Now they’ve made it easier for MyWeb users to add any other user as a contact; if you want to add someone who’s sharing interesting bookmarks to your contact list, you no longer have to wait for their approval.
Chris Sherman’s write-up at the Search Engine Watch Blog includes comments from Yahoo! Search Director of Product Management Tim Mayer, who says of the retooling, “It’s about lowering the barriers to entry to mainstream users so they can experience social search.”
Yahoo!’s also altered the way MyWeb info is shared, allowing users to group contacts into two categories - and restrict what info each crew can see. By default they’re called “friends” and “family,” but users can customize the names to their liking (”co-workers” and “associates,” “good” and “evil,” you name it). As Yahoo! puts it on the MyWeb 2.0 Blog, “now you can keep your worlds separate.”
