As of Sunday night, Google is no longer the science powering the search results on Amazon’s A9 engine and Alexa search bar. Without fanfare, Windows Live became the retailer’s new partner for search results, says Beta News.
It’s billed as a component of the so-called ’search wars’ escalation between Google and Microsoft, but is it really that much of a big deal? Loren Baker points out that Google’s AdWords ads are not serving on Amazon sites like A9 and imdb (the internet movie database), which suggests an opening for MSN’s burgeoning adCenter product. Says Baker, “Is it any coincidence that MSN adCenter is planning to expand their keyword advertising network next month? No, I do not think there is any coincidence at all.”
Interestingly, Windows Live is joining hands with Amazon just a few days after launching their own shopping portal (in beta, of course) - which is smack in the middle of Amazon’s wheelhouse. So far it’s only compatible with IE for Windows, and we found it to be somewhat unresponsive, particularly when trying to narrow down product results by brand or seller. We know, we know, it’s beta. Barry Schwartz has a basic rundown on the Search Engine Watch Blog.
