It’s almost too nice a day today to stay cooped up inside, but Google news calls…and they’ve got a few ideas about getting out and about this summer while staying “planet-friendly.”
The Google Maps API has famously been used by folks to create ‘mashups,’ sites that combine Google’s maps with extraneous data like semi-fictional locations seen on TV shows, or the real birthplaces of Oscar-winning actors. Google itself has gotten into the act now, with the announcement of their first ‘official’ maps mashup, which combines maps of five US cities with eco-friendly businesses and attractions in each, accompanied by video ‘tours.’
Have a green summer finds Google collaborating with the Earth Day Network to plot (and publicize) places like a Vegas raw food restaurant, an LA ‘green spaces’ park, and The Orlando Science Center. Each map also links to helpful off-site mashups to assist the environmentally conscious vacationer; for instance, the New York map points to a very good subway resource, onNYturf.
Speaking of APIs… You’ll recall that news of the Google AdSense API leaked a tad early yesterday. As of early this morning, however, it’s out. It’s a free beta service intended for sites like “web hosts, blog hosts, Wiki hosts, forum hosts, and web publishers” that generate at least 100,000 page views a day.
As had been surmised, integrating the API would allow such sites’ content creators to start up and manage AdSense accounts without leaving the host site, allowing them to earn revenue from their work. Developers would share some of that revenue, and make an additional hundred bucks for every user they sign up who earns a hundred dollars from AdSense “in less than 180 days.” Interested (and qualified) parties can apply here.
