This week ABC, next week the world! Well, maybe not, but basic SEO tactics were briefly argued by lawyers on Tuesday’s episode of Boston Legal, the Shatner-fueled show about a quirky Boston law firm.
Barry Schwartz points out the Search Engine Roundtable forum thread discussing the episode. According to forum user ShadyKing, one of the secondary plots involved a consultant who was suing the owner of a website called “I hate my x boyfriend,” devoted to the online complaints of jilted women. Says ShadyKing:
“Apparently…if anyone Googled this guy’s name, the “I hate my x boy friend” results came up first and the guy alleged all the negative results had cost him nearly 40% of sales with his consulting business.”
The rebuttal from the defendant’s lawyer? Build a site that ranks better than “I hate my x boyfriend” for his name, pushing the negative results down the page.
Now, if only more people had seen it. According to The Futon Critic, Boston Legal “struggled” Tuesday night to get much audience share. Hmm, maybe if someone gets Simon and Paula to quarrel about PageRank…nah.
