Late last night, Greg Sterling posted that Microsoft had officially acquired Vexcel. “A worldwide leader in photogrammetry, imagery and remote sensing technologies” (you know, maps n’ stuff), says the press release, Microsoft hopes the infusion of Vexcel’s talent will boost the capabilities of its Virtual Earth and Live Local offerings.
Vexcel’s experts, having previously worked mainly for Uncle Sam, will have their work cut out for them executing Microsoft’s ambitious plans for their map and local products. Says Virtual Earth general manager Stephen Lawler:
“Delivering best-of-breed local search and mapping offerings to consumers, businesses and government customers will depend on providing a rich, immersive and dynamic experience that mirrors what can be experienced in the real world.”
So, just make a fully 3-Dimensional representation of the real world appear in an online environment, with relevant listings and ads. Check!
While they’re working on that, the Search Engine Watch Blog says Windows Live Local is using celebrities to plug its current capabilities.
Through June 30, curious folks can log in to CelebFavorties (a Live Local overlay) and find out which ludicrously expensive hotels are favored by the likes of Eva Longoria and Anna Kournikova in their home cities. The major revelation here is how boring these people are; A-Rod’s fave New York ‘neighborhood?’ Midtown. USC quarterback Matt Leinart’s LA food haunt? A national chain, the Cheesecake Factory. (Give Brittany Murphy points for the list that least looks like it was assembled by a PR drone). There’s not much here for seasoned Live Local users, but it does provide an introduction to those uninitiated with the service and gives celebs a chance to promote pet charities.
